What’s wrong with it?

IF THE HANDLE IS ACTUATED DURING A NON-EMERGENCY SITUATION AND DETACHES, THE EMERGENCY WINDOW CANNOT BE RE-SECURED, POSING A RISK THAT CHILDREN MAY FALL OR CLIMB OUT. HOWEVER, IF THE HANDLE WERE TO DETACH DURING AN EMERGENCY, THE EXIT WINDOW WILL OPEN AND EGRESS THROUGH THE WINDOW WILL NOT BE HINDERED.

SPECTAL INDUSTRIES IS RECALLING CERTAIN VERTICAL EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOWS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 18, 2011, THROUGH AUGUST 5, 2011, SOLD FOR USE AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON BLUE BIRD AND THOMAS BUILT SCHOOL BUSES.

INCORRECT RIVETS MAY HAVE BEEN USED TO ATTACH THE HANDLES THAT AN OCCUPANT WOULD USE TO REMOVE THE WINDOW IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
