What’s wrong with it?

IF LEFT UNCHECKED, THE WELDS MAY COMPLETELY FAIL, ALLOWING THE APU TO FALL FROM THE FRAME RAIL. IF THE UNIT FAILS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED, THE UNIT COULD STRIKE ANOTHER VEHICLE OR A PEDESTRIAN INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH OR INJURY.

IDLE FREE IS RECALLING CERTAIN AUXILIARY POWER UNITS (APUS) SOLD FROM OCTOBER 2009 TO MAY 2011, AND INSTALLED AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT ON HEAVY TRUCKS.

THE WELDS ON THE METAL HOUSING OF THE FRAME RAIL SYSTEM MAY CRACK AND TEAR.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
