The short answer

NHTSA received ARVINMERITOR, INC’s report on Feb 24, 2011. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

REDUCED JOINT STRENGTH OF THE SPINDLE OF THE AXLE COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

ARVINMERITOR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MC16 AND MC16 TYPE TAG AXLE ASSEMBLIES THAT WERE SHIPPED TO MOTOR COACH INDUSTRIES BETWEEN OCTOBER 21, 2010, AND DECEMBER 6, 2010, FOR USE ON RECREATIONAL VEHICLES.

BOLTS USED TO CONNECT THE AXLE HOUSING TO THE SPINDLE OF THE AXLE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY HEAT TREATED, RESULTING IN POTENTIALLY COMPROMISED HARDNESS AND STRENGTH THAT, IN TURN COULD LEAD TO REDUCED JOINT INTEGRITY.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
