The short answer

NHTSA received UFI FILTERS USA’s report on May 18, 2010. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, A NO-START CONDITION MAY RESULT AND FUEL MAY BE PUMPED OUT ONTO THE GROUND AND IF AN INGNITION SOURCE IS PRESENT, A FIRE CAN OCCUR. IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, THE ENGINE MAY STOP DUE TO INADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY AND THIS COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST OR A LOSS OF BRAKE POWER ASSIST, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

UFI FILTERS USA IS RECALLING CERTAIN AFTERMARKET FUEL FILTERS SOLD UNDER THE PUROLATOR BRAND NAME, P/N F65277, SHIPPED FROM MARCH 11 THROUGH APRIL 27, 2010, FOR USE ON VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES.

DUE TO INCORRECT DESIGN, THE QUICK CONNECTORS MAY NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
