The short answer

NHTSA received BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC’s report on Aug 7, 2009. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

FAILURE OF THE FUEL PUMP WILL CAUSE INADEQUATE FUEL TO REACH THE ENGINE AND CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING. A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WITHOUT WARNING COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 THROUGH 2008 R1200 GS MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 2006 AND JANUARY 2008.

THE SEALING OF THE FUEL PUMP CONTROL UNIT HOUSING MIGHT BE INSUFFICIENT AND WATER COULD INTRUDE INTO THE CONTROL UNIT HOUSING CREATING A HUMID ATMOSPHERE.

UNDER SUCH CONDITIONS, THE FUEL PUMP COULD CORRODE AND THEN FAIL.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
