The short answer

NHTSA received PIERCE MANUFACTURING’s report on Jun 25, 2009. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 25, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE DOOR OPENS, THE SCBA CYLINDERS MAY FALL OUT OF THE COMPARTMENT AND ONTO THE ROADWAY, POSSIBLY BECOMING ROAD HAZARD TO OTHER MOTORISTS WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

PIERCE IS RECALLING 466 MODEL YEAR 2003 THROUGH 2009 FIRE APPARATUS BODIES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN DECEMBER 10, 2003 AND MARCH 9, 2009, AND MAY HAVE BEEN EQUIPPED WITH DUAL SCBA CYLINDER STORAGE COMPARTMENTS.

THESE COMPARTMENTS EXTEND INBOARD HORIZONTALLY FROM THE SIDE OF THE REAR BODY.

THE SCBA COMPARTMENT DOOR LATCH MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED INCORRECTLY, ALLOWING THE DOOR TO POP OPEN WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
