The short answer

NHTSA received FORD MOTOR COMPANY’s report on Jun 23, 2009. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IN CERTAIN TYPES OF VERY SEVERE CRASHES, THE FUEL TANK MAY BE DAMAGED AND RESULT IN A LEAK. A FUEL LEAK IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

FORD IS RECALLING 65 MY 2008-2009 E-350 AND MY 2009 E450 CUTAWAY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH SCHOOL BUS PREP PACKAGES FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 301, “FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY.” THESE VEHICLES MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH THE FUEL TANK PROTECTION BRACKETS THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR SCHOOL BUS APPLICATIONS.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
