The short answer

NHTSA received INNOVATIVE ENGINEERING’s report on Feb 23, 2009. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

FRACTURED WHEEL STUDS COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

INNOVATIVE IS RECALLING 4 MY 2008 SFS-45, SDS-45 AND MY 2009 SDS-42 BUSES EQUIPPED WITH ARVINMERITOR AXLE ASSEMBLIES.

THE WHEEL END STUDS MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY TEMPERED RENDERING THEM BRITTLE AND SUSCEPTIBLE TO FRACTURE.

IF ONE WHEEL STUD FRACTURES, THE REMAINING WHEEL STUDS ARE REQUIRED TO CARRY MORE LOAD.

IF LEFT IN THIS CONDITION, THE REMAINING WHEEL STUDS MAY ALSO FRACTURE EVEN IF THEY ARE PROPERLY MANUFACTURED.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
