The short answer

NHTSA received RECARO NORTH AMERICA, INC.’s report on Feb 19, 2009. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE BACKREST DETACHED FROM THE SEAT IN A VEHICLE CRASH, THE SEAT OCCUPANT WOULD NOT BE SECURELY FASTENED TO THE SEAT AND MAY SUSTAIN INJURIES.

RECARO NORTH AMERICA IS RECALLING 8 ERGOMED ES ERGONOMIC AFTERMARKET SEATS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN MAY AND DECEMBER 2008.

THE ERGOMED ES IS A UNIVERSAL APPLICATION, NOT SPECIFIC TO ONE VEHICLE.

APPLICATIONS BASED ON AVAILABLE ADAPTER BRACKET KITS.

THE RECLINER BRACKET MAY BREAK IN THE EVENT OF A REAR IMPACT, WHICH POTENTIALLY WILL CAUSE THE BACKREST TO DETACH FROM THE SEAT CUSHION STRUCTURE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
