The short answer

NHTSA received HINO MOTORS SALES U.S.A., INC.’s report on Nov 24, 2008. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 21, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THIS WOULD DISABLE THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM, STOP THE SUPPLY OF AIR TO THE AIR TANK, AND MAY RESULT IN INSUFFICIENT BRAKING POWER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

HINO IS RECALLING 3,836 MY 2008 ND8J, NE8J, NJ8J, AND NV8J CLASS 6 AND 7, CONVENTIONAL CAB, MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPED WITH J08E-TV OR J08E-TW ENGINES.

THERE IS AN IMPROPER SHAPE OF THE SUPPLY PUMP COUPLER LOCATED BETWEEN THE SUPPLY PUMP AND THE AIR COMPRESSOR.

THE COUPLING MAY CRACK, THE GEAR TRAIN AND VALVES OF THE ENGINE COULD BREAK, AND THE ENGINE COULD STOP RUNNING.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
