The short answer

NHTSA received AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP.’s report on Jun 3, 2008. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THIS CAN RESULT IN INTERMITTENT OR COMPLETE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER, WHICH CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF LIGHTING AND/OR STALLING OF THE ENGINE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

AMERICAN SUZUKI IS RECALLING 9,109 MY 2008 GSX1300R MOTORCYCLES.

IMPROPER ROUTING OF THE IGNITION SWITCH WIRING HARNESS CAN CAUSE A BENT PORTION OF THE WIRING HARNESS TO FLEX RATHER THAN SLIDE WHEN THE HANDLEBAR IS MOVED FROM RIGHT TO LEFT OR LEFT TO RIGHT.

REPEATED SIDE-TO-SIDE MOVEMENT OF THE HANDLEBAR, AND FLEXING OF THE BENT PORTION WIRING HARNESS, CAN EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE IGNITION SWITCH LEAD WIRES TO BECOME CUT OR BROKEN.

What should you do?

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE IGNITION SWITCH LEAD WIRE ROUTING. IF THE LEAD WIRE HARNESS IS INCORRECTLY ROUTED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LOWER PORTION IGNITION SWITCH (WHICH CONTAINS THE IGNITION SWITCH LEAD WIRES) AND MAKE SURE THAT THE WIRING HARNESS IS PROPERLY ROUTED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 10, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AMERICAN SUZUKI AT 1-800-255-2550.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
