The short answer
NHTSA received AUTOCAR, LLC’s report on Jan 23, 2008. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.
Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.
What’s wrong with it?
THE ADDITIONAL LENGTH IN THE STEERING SHAFT RESULTS IN THE NEED FOR INCREASED STEERING EFFORT ON THE PART OF THE VEHICLE’S DRIVER. THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE PREPARED FOR SUCH NEED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN UNPREDICTABLE REACTION BY THE DRIVER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
CERTAIN VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH A TELESCOPING STEERING SHAFT BETWEEN THE IN-CAB STEERING COMPONENTS AND THE POWER STEERING GEAR BOX, LOCATED ON THE VEHICLE’S FRAME.
THE STEERING SHAFT HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE TOO LONG.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
- This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
