The short answer

NHTSA received BRIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE NORTH AMERICA TIRE’s report on Sep 15, 2008. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THESE TIRES ARE USED AT SPEEDS ABOVE 55MPH MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT A TREAD/BELT DETACHMENT MAY OCCUR LEADING TO A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. THE DESCRIBED FAILURE MAY CREATE A RISK OF PROPERTY DAMAGE, SERIOUS INJURY, OR DEATH.

BFNT IS RECALLING 184 FIRESTONE BRAND FS400 TIRES, SIZE 315/80R22.5 LOAD RANGE L, COMMERCIAL TRUCK TIRES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JUNE 15 AND JUNE 28, 2008.

THESE TIRES WERE NOT BRANDED WITH THE MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT RATE WHICH DOES NOT CONFORM TO THE MARKING REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 119, “NEW PNEUMATIC TIRES FOR MOTOR VEHICLES WITH A GVWR OF MORE THAN 4,536 KILOGRAMS (10,000 POUNDS) AND MOTORCYCLES.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which tires, by their DOT codes: the range is in the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site, not in this file. Check the code on your tire’s sidewall against it.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
