The short answer

NHTSA received BENDIX COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SYSTEMS LLC’s report on Feb 21, 2008. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE DOUBLE CHECK VALVE BECOMES LODGED, IN THE EVENT OF A PRIMARY RESERVOIR FAILURE, AIR PRESSURE CAN LEAK PAST THE LODGED DOUBLE CHECK VALVE THEREBY DEPLETING THE SECONDARY RESERVOIR, CAUSING A REDUCED ABILITY FOR MODULATING THE EMERGENCY BRAKES.

BENDIX IS RECALLING 1,457 MV-3 DASH CONTROL VALVES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 3 THROUGH JANUARY 22, 2008.

SOME OF THE UNITS WERE SOLD FOR OEM APPLICATIONS ON NEW MOTOR VEHICLES AND SOME WERE SOLD FOR AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT.

AN INCORRECT CORE PIN IN THE INJECTION MOLD OF THE MOLDED VALVE BODY WAS USED CAUSING THE VALVE BODY TO BE OVERSIZED IN THE DOUBLE CHECK VALVE SEAT AREA.

THIS CONDITION CAN ALLOW THE RUBBER DOUBLE CHECK VALVE TO BECOME LODGED IN THE BODY OPENING UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
