The short answer

NHTSA received TRIMARK CORPORATION’s report on Jan 2, 2008. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, FORCE COULD CAUSE THE ROTOR TO CRACK AND THE DOOR WOULD NOT HAVE PRIMARY OR SECONDARY CLOSING SECURITY WHICH COULD POSSIBLY LEAD TO INJURY OF THE VEHICLE OCCUPANT.

CERTAIN TRIMARK SINGLE ROTOR DOOR LATCHES WITH PRODUCT DATE CODES R40Z, R41Z, R42Z, R43Z, R44Z, AND R45Z, INSTALLED FOR USE AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON PETERBILT AND KENWORTH HEAVY TRUCKS, FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE TRANSVERSE PULL STATIC LOAD REQUIREMENT OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO 206, “DOOR LOCKS AND DOOR RETENTION COMPONENTS.” A MALFUNCTION IN THE SINTERING FURNACE DID NOT EXHAUST LUBRICANT WHICH CONTAMINATED SOME PARTS PASSING THROUGH THE FURNACE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
