What’s wrong with it?
THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN THE STEERING LINK TO BECOME DISCONNECTED AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
CERTAIN ARVINMERITOR INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSIONS, MODULE RIS16EF18C1001, INSTALLED AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON CERTAIN BLUE BIRD SCHOOL BUSES.
THE CASTLE NUTS ON THE TIE ROD ENDS AND RELAY ROD STUD ENDS IN THE INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION ASSEMBLIES ARE LOOSE AND OR NOT TORQUED TO SPECIFICATION.
LOW AND OR NO TORQUE ON A NUT CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE SLACK IN THE STEERING SYSTEM, THEREBY ALLOWING THE TAPERED JOINT TO MOVE AND SUBSEQUENTLY SHEAR THE COTTER PIN.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
