The short answer

NHTSA received CAREFREE OF COLORADO’s report on Sep 19, 2007. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

SHOULD THE CABLE SHAFT BREAK, THE FCT TOP COULD THEN FREE-FALL INTO THE LOWER POSITION, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURIES.

CERTAIN CAREFREE POWERWINCH, MODEL P55000, FOLDING CAMPING TRAILER (FCT) WINCH INSTALLED AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT FOR USE ON CERTAIN RECREATIONAL VEHICLES.

AN INCORRECT MATERIAL WAS USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CABLE SHAFTS ON SOME FCT UNITS PRODUCED BETWEEN FEBRUARY 1 AND AUGUST 31, 2007.

UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES WHILE THE TOP IS BEING LIFTED, IF THE WINCH IS PLACED INTO A STALL CONDITION, THE CABLE SHAFT MAY BREAK PRIOR TO THE FUSE OR CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPING.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
