The short answer

NHTSA received COOPER TIRE & RUBBER CO.’s report on Jul 7, 2005. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE CUSTOMER INFLATES HIS/HER TIRE TO THE 35 P.S.I. INFLATION PRESSURE MARKED ON THE DOT SERIAL SIDE OF THE TIRE RATHER THAN THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDED INFLATION PRESSURE, THE TIRE MAY BE UNDER-INFLATED CAUSING THE TIRE TO WEAR PREMATURELY, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

CERTAIN COOPER DISCOVERER H/T TIRES, SIZE 235/65R17, MANUFACTURED BETWEEN MAY 1 AND MAY 21, 2005.

THESE TIRES WERE MOLDED WITH AN INCORRECT PSI RATING WHICH FAILS TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 109, NEW PNEUMATIC TIRES.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which tires, by their DOT codes: the range is in the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site, not in this file. Check the code on your tire’s sidewall against it.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
