The short answer

NHTSA received CEQUENT TOWING PRODUCTS, INC.’s report on Aug 5, 2004. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

SHOULD THE TOWED VEHICLE SEPARATE FROM THE TOWING VEHICLE, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR POSSIBLY DEATH.

CEQUENT AFTERMARKET HIDDEN HITCH BRAND TRAILER HITCHES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN FEBRUARY 1, 2002, AND MARCH 16, 2004, FOR USE EXCLUSIVELY ON NISSAN MY 2002-2004 FRONTIER PICK-UP TRUCKS.

WITH CONTINUED USE, LOAD FORCES MAY CAUSE THE SIDE BRACKET OF THE HITCH TO FATIGUE AND EVENTUALLY BREAK, POSSIBLY ALLOWING THE TOWED UNIT TO SEPARATE FROM THE TOWING VEHICLE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
