Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE STOP SIGNAL ARM IS NOT EXTENDED WHEN THE BUS IS LOADING OR UNLOADING PASSENGERS, IT MAY INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF VEHICLES PASSING A STOPPED SCHOOL BUS AND STRIKING PEDESTRIANS IN THE VICINITY OF THE BUS.

GUIDE SCHOOL BUSES, MODELS YEARS 1997 THROUGH 2003 MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 1, 1997, TO JULY 21, 2003.

THE STOP ARM DOES NOT DEPLOY WHEN THE RED WARNING LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON AS REQUIRED UNDER FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 131, “SCHOOL BUS PEDESTRIAN SAFETY DEVICES.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
