The short answer

NHTSA received BENDIX COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SYS.’s report on Sep 23, 2003. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE POWER SWITCH SHORTS, IT CAN RESULT IN AN OVER-CURRENT CONDITION IN THE ECU AND LEAD TO EXCESSIVE HEAT, SMOKE, AND POSSIBLE FIRE.

BENDIX EC-30T ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNITS (ECU) USED OR INSTALLED ON TOWED VEHICLES SUCH AS TRAILERS AND DOLLIES AND ALSO SOLD AS AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT.

THESE UNITS WERE SOLD FROM AUGUST 7, 2000, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 22, 2003.

IF THE TRAILER-MOUNTED ABS WARNING LAMP CIRCUIT EXPERIENCES AN ELECTRICAL SHORT AND THE SHORT IS NOT REPAIRED, THE HIGH SIDE POWER SWITCH INSIDE THE ECU THAT CONTROLS THE ILLUMINATION OF THE TRAILER-MOUNTED ABS WARNING LAMP MAY EVENTUALLY BECOME THERMALLY STRESSED AND EXPERIENCE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
