The short answer

NHTSA received TRANS/AIR MANUFACTURING CORP.’s report on Mar 6, 2003. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THIS CONDITION COULD HAPPEN WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

TRANS/AIR COMPRESSOR MOUNT KITS, PART NOS. 4012120-01, 4012120-02, AND 4012120-03, MANUFACTURED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1, 2002, AND MARCH 3, 2003.

THE MOUNTS IN QUESTION ARE ONLY INSTALLED IN 2003 FORD VEHICLES WITH A 7.3L ENGINE.

THESE COMPRESSOR MOUNT KITS CONTAIN A BELT GUARD THAT SHOULD NOT BE USED ON A 2003 MODEL YEAR VEHICLE.

THERE MAY BE CONTACT BETWEEN THE BELT GUARD AND THE BRAKE LINE.

THIS CONTACT, IF SEVERE ENOUGH, COULD RUD THROUGH THE BRAKE LINE RESULTING IN REDUCED BRAKING CAPACITY.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
