What’s wrong with it?
FAILURE OF THE AXLE COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
MERITOR BRAND FH946U AXLE ASSEMBLIES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 9, 1996, AND NOVEMBER 6, 2001, USED AS A FRONT STEERING AXLE ON LOW FLOOR BUSES BUILT BY NEW FLYER INDUSTRIES.
THESE ASSEMBLIES WERE OMITTED FROM THE POST-HEAT TREATMENT MAGNAFLUX OPERATION WHICH COULD RESULT IN SURFACE CRACKING AND POSSIBLE FAILURE OF THE AXLE.
THIS CAMPAIGN SUPERCEEDES ARVINMERITOR’S PREVIOUS RECALL, 02E-032, TO INCLUDE ADDITION AXLE ASSEMBLIES.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
