The short answer

NHTSA received CARLISLE TIRE AND WHEEL’s report on Feb 19, 2003. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE WHEEL WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

17 X 8 CRAGAR S/S CLASSIC WHEELS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN FEBRUARY 16, 2001, AND FEBRUARY 18, 2002.

THE DEFECT IS A WELD THAT DID NOT FULLY PENETRATE TO THE BASE METAL.

THE WHEEL WOULD DEVELOP CRACKS ALONG THE WELD AND COULD FAIL TO HOLD THE LOAD AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
