The short answer

NHTSA received VERMEER MANUFACTURING COMPANY’s report on Dec 31, 2002. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES BEING UNABLE TO APPLY THE TRAILER PARKING/EMERGENCY SPRING BRAKES DURING PARKING IN THE EVENT OF A TRAILER SUPPLY LINE FAILURE. UNINTENDED ROLLAWAY COULD OCCUR, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH TO THE VEHICLE OCCUPANT OR ANY BYSTANDERS.

ON CERTAIN TUB GRINDER TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH BENDIX SR-5 TRAILER SPRING BRAKE VALVE ASSEMBLIES, THE MOLDED RUBBER FACE OF THE INLET/EXHAUST VALVE (I/E VALVE) COMPONENT OF THE AFFECTED VALVES CAN SEPARATE FROM THE VALVE’S METAL INSERT.

AIR CAN BE TRAPPED BY A SEPARATED I/E VALVE CAUSING IT TO BALLOON AND BLOCK THE EXHAUST PASSAGE OF THE TRAILER SPRING BRAKE CIRCUIT.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
