The short answer

NHTSA received COUNTRY COACH INC’s report on Mar 4, 2002. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

SUDDEN AIR SPRING DEFLATION WILL CAUSE LOSS OF PROPER SUSPENSION RIDE HEIGHT AND PRODUCE DIFFICULTY WITH STEERING VEHICLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

ON CERTAIN BUS CONVERSION MOTOR HOMES, THE SUPPORT PLATE MOUNTING HOLES WERE IMPROPERLY DRILLED ALLOWING CONTACT BETWEEN THE FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER DUST COVERS AND THE AIR SPRING PISTON.

THE REPEATED MOTION OF THE SHOCK ABSORBER DUST COVER MAY FRACTURE THE AIR SPRING PISTON.

CONTACT OF THE AIR SPRING BELLOWS WITH SHARP METAL EDGES OF THE FRACTURED PISTON COULD CAUSE PENETRATION OF THE BELLOWS LEADING TO SUBSEQUENT DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRING.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
