The short answer

NHTSA received ALLISON DIV., GM CORP.’s report on Mar 18, 2002. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THE DRIVER MAY INADVERTENTLY HAVE THE VEHICLE MOVE IN A DIRECTOR OPPOSITE TO HIS INTENTION WHICH COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: THE “CHECK TRANSMISSION” LIGHT IN CERTAIN ALLISON MD WORLD TRANSMISSIONS, A DIVISION OF THE GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION, WAS INCORRECTLY CALIBRATED INTO THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU).

THESE TRANSMISSION WERE INSTALLED ON CERTAIN INTERNATIONAL NGV 4000 / 7000 SERIES TRUCKS.

THE “CHECK TRANSMISSION” LIGHT INDICATES TO THE DRIVER THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT FULLY OPERATIONAL, AND THAT IT SHOULD BE REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY.

IN THOSE INSTANCES THAT THE “CHECK TRANSMISSION” LIGHT WOULD NORMALLY BE ILLUMINATED AS A RESULT OF A PROBLEM THAT PREVENTS DIRECTION CHANGES (SUCH AS SHIFT SELECTOR MALFUNCTION) THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ADEQUATELY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
