The short answer

NHTSA received ARVINMERITOR’s report on Mar 20, 2002. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

AS A RESULT, THE TABLE COULD SEPARATE FROM THE WEB, THEREBY REDUCING THE OVERALL BRAKING CAPABILITIES OF THE TRAILER, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: MERITOR BRAND 12 1/4” “Q” BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLIES INSTALLED ON ARVINMERITOR TRAILER AXLES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 17, 2001, THROUGH JANUARY 28, 2002.

THE AFFECTED BRAKE SHOES BEAR LOT STAMP NUMBERS 501031, 501034, AND 501070.

THE WELDS ATTACHING THE BRAKE SHOE WEB TO ITS TABLE DID NOT PENETRATE THE METAL COMPLETELY.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
