The short answer

NHTSA received INTERNATIONAL TRUCK AND ENGINE’s report on Oct 3, 2001. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

A HEADLIGHT FUSING CONDITION COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING TO THE DRIVER AND POTENTIALLY LEAVE THE DRIVER IN A BLACKOUT SITUATION WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE IN THE DARK.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS.

THESE VEHICLES COULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS, THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS, OR BOTH.

A SOFTWARE PROBLEM WITHIN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CONTROLLER (ESC) CAN CAUSE THE CIRCUIT FOR THE LOW BEAM OR THE CIRCUIT FOR THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS TO FUSE OR OPEN, RESULTING IN LOSS OF EITHER THE LOW OR HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS OR POSSIBLY EVEN BOTH.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
