The short answer

NHTSA received INTERNATIONAL TRUCK AND ENGINE’s report on Jun 26, 2001. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

UNINTENTIONAL ACTIVATION OF REMOTE BODY ACCESSORIES COULD CAUSE A CRASH RESULTING IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY, OR DEATH.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS.

THERE IS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH A REMOTE POWER MODULE.

THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH THE ABILITY TO ADD SIX REMOTE SWITCHES PER MODULE, WHICH ARE MOUNTED OUTSIDE THE CAB AND ARE USED TO TURN ON AND OFF CIRCUITS THAT PERFORM CUSTOM ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS.

IF TWO OR MORE REMOTE SWITCHES ARE ACTUATED ON WITHIN 100MS OF ONE ANOTHER, ALL SIX OF THE OUTPUTS ON THE REMOTE POWER MODULE WILL TURN ON.

IF TWO OR MORE REMOTE SWITCHES ARE ACTUATED OFF WITH 100MS OF ONE ANOTHER, ALL SIX OF THE OUTPUTS ON THE REMOTE POWER MODULE WITH TURN OFF.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
