The short answer

NHTSA received MOSS MOTORS, LTD’s report on Sep 17, 2001. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THE JACK IS INTENDED FOR TIRE CHANGING ONLY, NO MORE THAT FOUR OR FIVE INCHES OF LIFT. IF THE JACK IS USED TO RAISE THE CAR FOR REPAIRS AND/OR EXTEND BEYOND THE NORMAL WORKING RANGE, THE INNER THREAD SHAFT COULD UNSCREW COMPLETELY FROM ITS OUTER THREAD HOUSING AND TOPPLE. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN, ANYONE NEAR OR UNDER THE VEHICLE COULD BE INJURED OR KILLED.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: REPLACEMENT AND REPRODUCTION JACKS FOR THE RESTORATION AND MAINTENANCE OF VINTAGE BRITISH CARS.

THE INNER THREADED SHAFT IS SWAGED (MUSHROOMED OUT BY A DROP PUNCH) WHICH LIMITS THE TRAVEL OF THE SHAFT IN ITS THREADS AND HOUSING.

ON SOME JACKS, INSUFFICIENT FOURCE WAS USED TO SWAGE THE SHAFT END ALLOWING THE SHAFT TO COMPLETELY UNSCREW FROM THE HOUSING.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
