NHTSA received ADVANCED ENGINE MANAGEMENT’s report on Apr 25, 2001. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE THROTTLE IS UNABLE TO RETURN TO THE CLOSED POSITION, THE DRIVER MAY LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: AIR BYPASS VALVES PART NOS. 20-401, 20-402, AND 20-403, SOLD BETWEEN AUGUST 1, 2000, AND JANUARY 31, 2001, FOR INSTALLATION ON PASSENGER VEHICLES TO PREVENT INGESTION OF WATER INTO THE ENGINE.

THE VALVES ARE CONSTRUCTED OF TWO PLASTIC PIECES SONICALLY WELDED WITH A SILICON DIAPHRAGM AND FOAM SPRING.

THE WELD SEAM CAN CRACK UNDER HIGH STRESS LOADS AND THE VALVE’S INTERNAL DIAPHRAGM AND SPRING MAY BE INGESTED INTO THE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH IN TURN, MAY CAUSE THE THROTTLE TO STICK OPEN.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
