The short answer

NHTSA received REESE PRODUCTS, INC’s report on Feb 21, 2001. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THIS WOULD ALLOW THE HITCH BALL, AND THE TRAILER THAT IS COUPLED TO THE BALL, TO DISCONNECT FROM THE TOWING VEHICLE, POSSIBLY CAUSING A VEHICLE CRASH.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: INTERCHANGEABLE HITCH BALLS, KIT PART NUMBERS #57000, #57001, AND #57002, MANUFACTURED BETWEEN FEBRUARY 1, 2000, AND OCTOBER 31, 2000, WHICH ARE AFFIXED TO A MOUNTING POST ON A TOW VEHICLE WITH A VERTICALLY ALIGNED PLUNGER APPLIED THROUGH THE TOP CENTER OF THE HITCH BALL.

THE PLUNGER HOLDING THE HITCH BALL TO THE MOUNTING POST CAN WORK LOOSE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
