The short answer

NHTSA received DEXTER AXLE CO., INC.’s report on Feb 5, 2001. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

INSUFFICIENT SURFACE AREA WILL RESULT IN LOOSENING OF THE WHEEL BOLTS WHICH MAY CAUSE THE WHEEL(S) TO BECOME DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. LOSS OF THE WHEEL(S) COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: HI-SPEC WHEELS, PART NO. 356655, USED IN COMBINATION WITH DEXTER AXLE (6) BOLT BRAKE DRUMS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN FEBRUARY AND OCTOBER 2000.

A DESIGN CHANGE WITH THE BRAKE DRUM RENDERED THEM INCOMPATIBLE WITH CERTAIN CAST ALUMINUM WHEELS PRODUCED BY HI-SPEC WHEEL & TIRE COMPANY.

BRAKE DRUMS USED WITH THESE WHEELS DO NOT PROVIDE SUFFICIENT MOUNTING SURFACE AREA FOR SUPPORT OF THESE WHEELS.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
