The short answer

NHTSA received PRECISION AUTOMOTIVE IND., INC’s report on Sep 19, 2000. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

SHOULD SPINDLE FRACTURE OCCUR, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE REAR WHEEL WILL SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE AND THIS WOULD MOST LIKELY OCCUR WHEN THE VEHICLE HITS A POTHOLE, DURING CORNERING, OR OTHER SITUATIONS WHERE HIGH STRESS IS PRESENTED.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: REAR WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLIES FOR AFTERMARKET AUTOMOBILE REPLACEMENT PARTS.

PART NOS. 512000, 512001, 513012, 512000V, 512001V, 512002V, 513012V; CHICAGO RAWHIDE PART NOS.: BR930053, BR930070, BR930089, BR930093, AND GBR930093 MANUFACTURED BETWEEN MAY 1, 1999, AND AUGUST 31, 2000.

THESE HUB ASSEMBLIES HAVE A HIGH STRESS CONCENTRATION AT THE SHOULDER CORNER RADIUS WHICH INITIATES FATIGUE CRACKING.

FAILURE OCCURS WHEN THE CRACK GROWS TO THE POINT WHERE THE SPINDLE FRACTURES SUDDENLY.

THE REAR WHEEL OF THE VEHICLE ATTACHES DIRECTLY TO THE SUBJECT HUB.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
