The short answer

NHTSA received AIRBAG SYSTEMS, INC.’s report on Mar 3, 2000. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THE VEHICLE OCCUPANT IS UNAWARE THAT THE AIRBAG HAS BEEN SWITCHED OFF OR DISABLED WHICH COULD RESULT IN INJURY IN A CRASH. ALSO, THE OCCUPANT IS UNAWARE OF ANY FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION THAT MAY BE DETECTED BY THE VEHICLE’S AIR BAG MONITORING SYSTEM BECAUSE THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LAMP STAYS ON WHEN AN AIR BAG IS DISABLED.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: THE AIR BAG ON/OFF SWITCH ASSEMBLIES DO NOT PROVIDE A SEPARATE LIGHT TO INDICATE THAT AN AIR BAG HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SWITCHED OFF OR DISABLED.

ALSO, THE VEHICLE’S AIR BAG READINESS INDICATOR LAMP STAYS ON WHEN AN AIR BAG IS DISABLED.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
