The short answer

Announced by CPSC on Aug 29, 2002. Copied from CPSC on Oct 19, 2026.

Every line below is in CPSC’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

The length of the crank arm in the 2003 model fails to allow sufficient space between the rider’s foot and the front wheel, when the front wheel is turned backwards. The rider’s foot could come in contact with the front wheel, causing the rider to lose control, fall and possibly suffer serious injury.
